Thornton Wilder Center for the Arts
Peterborough, NH

Nextstage Design and Scully Architects assisted Contoocook Valley High School faculty and citizen group in Peterborough, NH to review previous plans for a performing and visual arts space in Contoocook Regional High School. The site, a sloped area between two wings of the school, had become known as “The Void.”

Our team held several meetings with the board of the Fill the Void organization, listening to the needs of community members and educators for a space the school and community could use for performances, exhibits, rehearsals, meetings, and even robotics competitions.

Rather than continuing with the previous plan for a traditional 600 seat raked floor auditorium for $14 million, our team developed a plan for a flexible space with retractable seating, enabling the space to transform to suit the users’ needs, for $8 million. Designs for this endeavor, re-named the Thornton Wilder Center for the Arts, will be developed when funding has been secured.
