Children’s Museum and Theatre of Maine
Portland, Maine

The Children’s Museum and Theatre of Maine (CMTM) is the result of a 2008 merger between the Children’s Museum (founded in 1976) and the Children’s Theatre (which dates to 1923). From its earliest years, the theater has presented theater for children by children. Currently the performers are 8 to 17 years old, and the audiences comprise all ages. CMTM is now housed in 15,000 GSF in downtown Portland. Working with a developer, CMTM is planning a new building that more than doubles their space and greatly increases the theater footprint. It is truly a quantum leap for the organization. Nextstage Design worked with CMTM leadership and staff to develop a program and concept aligned with their aspirations and fund-raising abilities, while providing an intimate and supportive space for young performers and audience members. The project is currently in design.
